In 1914, all liquid soap was made the same way; potassium hydroxide and oil or fat. When World War I started, glycerin, a component of real soap, was needed to create explosives. A cheaper alternative to natural soap was needed, and dangerous chemicals were introduced that mimic the effects of REAL soap. Unfortunately, this cheap, chemical soup stuck around, and it has become very difficult to find REAL soap.
